Prof. Dr. Alexander Egyed heads the Institute for Software Engineering and Automation at the Johannes Kepler University, Austria. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, USA. Before joining the JKU, Dr. Egyed worked as a Research Scientist for Teknowledge Corporation, USA (2000-2007) and then as a Research Fellow at the University College London, UK (2007-2008). Dr. Egyed received a Doctorate degree in 2000 and a Master of Science degree in 1996, both in Computer Science, from the University of Southern California, USA under the mentorship of Dr. Barry Boehm. His research interests include software design modeling, requirements engineering, consistency checking and resolution, traceability, and change impact analysis. He is a member of ACM, ACM SigSoft, IEEE, and IEEE Computer Society.

Dr. Egyed has a strong track record for working on software-intensive systems in interdisciplinary domains. For the past two years, he worked with the Northrop Grumman Company, Sarnoff, and Honeywell on integrating and testing a system that autonomously controls teams of unmanned vehicles. Previously, he worked with the Boeing Company and the Carnegie Mellon University on defining and integrating product-line architectures for avionics systems. Before that, he helped the Mitre Corporation in the development and evaluation of collaborative agents for target detection and tracking in sensor grids. He recently also completed a project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on providing self-healing support for a legacy DoD air tasking order system.

A recent article in the journal of the Communications of the ACM (June 2007) recognized Dr. Egyed as the 10th best scholar in software engineering. This article ranked thousands of software engineering scholars according to their quality and quantity of publications. In addition, Dr. Egyed’s work has been chosen among the “best of” papers of the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2001) – the premier conference in software engineering – and the International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (2001).

Dr. Egyed’s work has been supported by several large research grants from the USA and UK. His work has led to over 50 refereed publications in scientific books, journals, and conferences (not counting workshops or non-referred publications). He also built a number of software products that are being used (or have been used) in industry and academia alike. While his work covers a broad spectrum of research issues in software and systems engineering, it does center on the desire to better integrate modeling into the software development process.

In addition to development and research, Dr. Egyed provided numerous professional services to the community. He reviewed papers for many journals, conferences, and workshops including but not limited to the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE), IEEE Software, and the ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (TOSEM). Dr. Egyed also helped organize many software engineering events, including a special issue of the IEEE Software, the International Conference on Automated Software Engineering as a Program Committee chair, and a range of workshops on software modeling and component integration. He also served the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a panelist twice.

Dr. Egyed is a national of the European Union (EU) but worked in the USA for the past 12 years.
